Congratulations to Bart and Mahi our 2025 Champions!
2025 DF65 A-Rig Maryland State Championship Regatta Report
July 5th was a beautiful and sunny day at Lake Whittier in Frederick, Maryland. The best DF65 Sailors in the area showed up to try and best the others to become the state champion. Anyone could win, as this was a veteran group. The winds were nice at 3 to 7 mph with a few gusts here and there. This regatta typically brings together the best of the best and this year did not disappoint.
The racers sailed four races before the break and then four after. Bart and Mahi lit the scene on fire as they won the first four races. The rest of the group rotated who was finishing 2nd and 3rd as at the half they were all way behind the leader, but all within only four points of each other.
The second set of races began with Mike Cavenaugh taking charge giving Mahi his first 2nd of the day. Mike ended up winning 3 of the 4 races and taking 3rd on the day despite being in last place at the break. John Houfek was very consistent as he started the regatta with a 4th, but took a 1st, two 2nds and three 3rds. This was enough to place 2nd on the day. Alan Krusinger’s two 2nd place finishes were enough to finish in 4th place. Dick White had a rough second half with boat troubles and finished in 5th. Mahi was the star of the day, as the little boat finished less than second only once (4th). Bart ended up besting 2nd place by 7 points and became the Maryland State Campion.
After the trophy presentations everyone went over to the onsite pizza place (Brother’s Pizza) for an hour and a half of great comradery. Everyone had a great time talking about the day and telling stories. A big thank you to Andy for coming out to help set up and Sharon for scorekeeping! Braulio was on scene again with his rescue boat and may have recruited another member to his fleet! Our rescue team did make one dramatic rescue! Great job Braulio!
