2026 Capital Cup Regatta Report Race                                                                  Director- Kyle Russell

The 2026 Capital Cup delivered eight competitive races, with a tightly contested battle at the front of the fleet throughout the regatta. Racing was scored under RRS Appendix A, with nine sailors competing across the eight-race series. The weather was sunny, temperture was 70 degrees with winds 5 to 9 mph.   The teams that represented their clubs showed great comradery, class, and a deep commitment to our sport and the region.

Overall Individual Results:

Danny, sailing Sail # 05, captured the 2026 Capital Cup best Sailor award with an impressive and consistent performance. Danny finished with 20 total points, including three race wins and five additional finishes in the top four. His scores were 1, 1, 2, 4, 3, 4, 1 and 4.

The fight for second place was extremely close. Jarl (Sail #88) and Walter (Sail #02) both finished the regatta with 21 points, just one point behind Danny. Jarl secured second place with scores of 4, 2, 3, 1, 5, 1, 4 and 1, while Walter's scores were 2, 3, 5, 2, 1, 3, 3 and 2. (Jarl had more 1sts.)

Bart and his boat Mahi (Sail #777) finished fourth overall with 26 points. Bart showed strong consistency throughout the series, recording six finishes in the top four despite some unlucky events. His individual results were 3, 5, 4, 3, 2, 2, 2 and 5.

Alan, sailing Sail #78, finished fifth with 36 points. His strongest performance came in Race 3, where he took the win.

Kyle (Sail #93) placed sixth with 47 points, followed by Rob (Sail #53) in seventh with 56 points. Koni (Sail #888) finished eighth with 63 points, while Larry (Sail #0) completed the fleet in ninth place with 70 points.

A Close Battle at the Top1

The defining feature of the 2026 Capital Cup was the remarkably close competition among the leading sailors. Danny's 20-point winning total was only one point ahead of both Jarl and Walter and six ahead of Bart. With Jarl and Walter tied on points, their individual race results determined the final order.

The battle remained close throughout the series, with Danny, Jarl, Walter and Bart collectively producing strong results in virtually every race. Bart's consistent top-four finishes kept NMMYC firmly in contention, while the three sailors ahead of him separated themselves through their ability to convert strong finishes into race wins and low point totals.

The 2026 Capital Cup ultimately belonged to Danny and the Cumberland Valley Model Yacht Club, whose combination of race victories and consistent top-four finishes earned them the championship by the narrowest of margins. Jarl and Walter's 21-point tie made for an especially tight finish behind the winner, while Bart's 26-point total secured a strong fourth-place result and a nice points total for the Northern Maryland Model Yacht Club.

With only six points separating first through fourth place, the 2026 Capital Cup proved to be a highly competitive regatta from start to finish. Maybe the best ever!

When all the team totals were counted, The Cumberland Valley Model Yacht Club took home the cup! Northern Maryland finished in a close second (6 pts back), The Solomon Island Model Boat Club third and Heritage Harbor fourth. This year's competition was the closest yet and was decided by many incredible moments.
