Latest News!

First off, I would like to welcome our newest members to our sailing family. Please welcome George, Ron, Scott and John Houfek to our club! We now have 67 members! Wow!

We had an adventurous Regional Championship on Saturday that will be remembered as one of most competitive and skipper testing regattas, as they had to adjust to the changing and extreme weather conditions. These are the regattas that will be remembered. I will be sending out the regatta report soon. I would also like to thank our volunteers Andy, Paul, Charlene, Braulio and Connie. You all did a fantastic job! This was the first regatta that I have attended where you could order anything off the restaurant’s menu and the food was really good! What a regatta! Fantastic job team!

October 5th - 2024 Capital Cup. RD= Kyle Skipper’s Meeting- 09:45 (8 races)

In less than a month, we host the Capital Cup at our lake. This is a free team racing event. Skippers sail their DF65s with an A-Rig and short or long keel. It looks like there will be at least three teams this year. The defending champions Menno Haven, the Solomon Islands and our team will battle it out. Mike Cavanaugh and Rob are busy building their teams and we need to figure out who is representing NMMYC this year. If you want to represent our club this year, please send me a private email at nmmyc1@yahoo.com. This is a fun event, so make sure you sign up!

November 2nd- The 2nd Annual West Virginia Adventure Rides "Round the World Race". RD= Mari or Alan

(Skipper's Meeting is at 10:45, Pizza Party Starts at 12:00)

Our last regatta of the season is in November. The cost is only $10 if you use the “Friends and Family” option on PayPal. You could also bring $10 to the Capital Cup. Food and beverages are provided and there will be trophies and prizes. Last year, we all had a blast doing this race. Please sign up at the link down below.

Location: Is our lake. Two races around the lake, divided by a pizza party, tests our sailors and their DF65's sailing ability, as they try to conquer a unique and fun adventure course! DF65, A-Rig with long or short keel.

Our Holiday Party is on the 7th of December this year. Would any one like to volunteer to head this up? It was really nice last year and is a must attend if you like having fun. We will let you know more as we get closer. Please put this on your calendar now.

We will sail our DF65s with A Rigs eight races. Points will be awarded in order of finish to go towards the Club Championship. Racing for fun is strongly encouraged! Long or short keels.

The course is abnormally large and tests skippers ability to navigate a unique course with their DF65s. This event is now sponsored by the West Virginia Adventure Rides.

July 1st, 2023 Report

Day two of our club's championship was held yesterday at Lake Whittier. The weather was great with some challenging winds (1 to 5mph). We also had a couple of families who watched us race, which is always nice to see. Everyone who attended our race event received a commemorative coin and spirit necklace, which will have a significance at the end of year party. Don’t worry, all the rest of this year’s regattas have unique coins and necklaces too.

Now, onto our race day news…

First off, Bart had mechanical issues with his boat again this month leading to another “Did Not Finish”. I think, it’s time for Bart to put more effort into his boat maintenance. He did do very well in the other races by being “Mr. Consistent” and finishing the day in second place. Kyle did well on the second leg of the Club Championship, as he won two of the eight races and ended up taking third place. Although Bart and Kyle raced fast, one Sailor separated himself by being in a class of his own.

Mike C. ruled the day by crushing the competition by winning five of the eight races. He also took a second and third. Great sailing, Mike! You really were on your game! Rob, finished fourth place and our newest member, Winston, finished fifth place. Connie, rounded out the top sixth place with some good races and our new-comer, Paul, finished in seventh place.

We had 13 Sailors compete to be the “2023 Northern Maryland Model Yacht Club Champion”. Our scorer will combine the points and the top three finishers will be announced at our end of year celebration.

Overall, it was another fantastic day with everyone having fun and enjoying the great weather at our beautiful lake. The pizza and soda were a great way to finish our day with truly, great friends. I can’t tell you enough, how fortunate we are to have such great members! You are truly the best!

Opening Day! Great Sailing and Pizza with Friends!

The Northern Maryland Model Yacht Club had their Opening Day Celebration on April 2nd, 2022 at Lake Whittier in Fredrick, Maryland. Eleven DF65, RG 65, Affinity and Compass Sailors were all there to have fun. Racing started at 10 AM and ended at about 12:30 at which time we will all have a pizza party at Brothers Pizza which is onsite. The pizza was fantastic! It was great to have so many nice people take part in the sailing and comradery. It was a really a special time both on and off the water. Here are some pictures below. .
